“Last tuesday afternoon I arrived at a spot I was going to hunt just before a humdinger of a storm rolled in. I was spending the night in a small cabin on the property owners property so as the rain washed my truck and Thor threw his hammer across the sky, I took a short nap on the cot…
Once it looked like holding my wet finger high in the sky would not result in me turning from rare to well done in a micro-second I ventured to do a little recon and then see what I could find.
The recon was to find a small extension of the camp that I had read about. Unfortunately after three hours of slogging through irrigation water flooded fields and dodging over friendly 2000lb draft horses, I seriously believed that this part of the camp had long gone down the creek.
Not to be put off hunting until almost dark, I ventured off to an area that I had hunted a few times before. This was the area that I had found my first 2 reale coin (1789) and Benhere had found his “bit boss” on a earlier hunt.
After about an hour I had found enough items to make me happy enough to head back to the truck.
I found a nice large Eagle D button and my best ever harmonia reed.
And I found all the parts to a candle stick holder.
As I got to my truck the property owner turned upon his ATV. Per orders from his wife, I was eating dinner with them that night. A good T-bone steak and some adult beverages was a great way to end the evening. I fell asleep to the sound of the creek outside the window and the glow of the wood stove in the cabin…
The next morning saw me stoking up the fire in the wood stove of the cabin and getting ready for a long days hunt… JD arrived in the area at about 8am and we headed off into the wilderness. As with all the hunts of late, it started rather slow for the first hour but then picked up and by the end of the 12 hours in the field, we were cussing (well I was) the fact that the sun was going down…
First off the iron…
Yes, I carried this stuff in my back dump pouch with me. The two top axes were in the same hole and as you can see, one of them still had the wood shaft in the head…
The two shoulder scale clips were found about six feet apart. Any ideas on the large lead disc at the top?
Here are the Minie balls I found.
And the Sharps bullets…We literally stumbled upon this area where there were groups of Sharps everywhere. JD’s Minelab was on fire…he did very well here.
I got a nice array of buttons to include a Great Coat button in the upper left. But I got a better button than that…
Here is a General Staff cuff button..
Here is the Rifleman cuff button. JD found one too. Both were found where we found all the Sharps bullets..
Now onto my final finds from this hunt. I have to preface this with the fact that I am not a coin hunter. Granted it may appear that the coin gods have been looking down on me recently but as JD can attest I really am out to find bullets and buttons and I do not go looking for coins……
So here they are.. a 1852 three cent piece, and two seated liberty dimes (1852, 1856).
It was a great hunt and we spent almost an hour chatting with the property owners before leaving. I rolled into my driveway a shade before midnight…” ~PB
