Another weekend..another weekend metal detecting for Papa Bear!
Saturday 24th
The property I went to today is in Scotts Hill, NC. It s owned by Dr. B. A dentist out of Wilmington. I met Dr. B. while on his property and he basically gave me permission to go anywhere and have at it.
I have attached photographs of my finds and a map of the property showing where each was found.
A. Gardner 2 ringer Confederate bullet
B. Unidentified item (seriously I have no idea)
C. Suspender buckle (pretty cool huh?)
D. Pre-Civil War button (not flat, slightly concave)
E. Small decorated button (button has words HAIR FANCY on the back side)
F. Part of a folding knife (New York Knife Company)
~PB
Item B looks like a eyelet from a boot or shoe. The kind you wrap your laces around versus the kind you thread your laces through.
Sunday 25th
Today we played “Dodge the T-Storms” and had to stop only once when the sky got black as coal for about an hour. Mother Nature put on a show for us throughout the afternoon. The musket balls came thick and fast as did the buttons. My best day so far since starting this hobby. Here are my finds:
A. Razor head with wood
B. Small flat button
C. NC State Seal Button (Score!!)
D. Robertson Extra Rich flat button (May be a button back)
E. Camp Lead and impacted .69 Cal Musket Balls
F. Buck Ball
G. .44 Cal Pistol Ball
H. .69 Cal Musket Ball
I. Two Williams Cleaners (One appears chewed by an animal)
J. Cannonball Fuse Cap?
K. PGA Tour Partners Club Charter Member token/ball marker
L. Spoon (No MD Hunt is complete without one)
A good day today! The NC State Seal button is apparently a big deal. This one has no makers marks on the back which apparently means it was a locally produced button!~PB
Here’s a better look at PB’s NC state seal button.
And here’s a better look at the button from J. Christopher Mitchell, American Antiques & Militaria
Good finds PB!
I’m just waitin for him to tell me he’s found a gold ingot someday!

When the first gold coin is found I will most likely still be hollering with joy when I call you!!!
And you are correct on the boot/shoe lace grommet. I have been stumping Marines who come into my office. Only one got it right and even he stated what it was in a question form….
Some pretty neat stuff there PB! Equally impressive that you’re able to identify so much of it.
Well, the internet and fellow history buffs do help!!
