A Different Kind of Find

2 Apr

Papa Bears greatest find this weekend didn’t even require his metal detector…just his eyes!

The jury is still out on exactly what kind of arrowhead it is but best guesses so far are Yadkin, Uwharrie or even a Caraway.

From looking at this chart found on the Piedmont Archaeological Society site, all three guesses could date this arrowhead anywhere between 500AD and 1700AD.
I think all the stuff PB finds are pretty cool but I’m especially excited about this particular find because I have such a soft spot for Native American history.

Hopefully with a bit more research, PB will find out exactly what this arrowhead is called.

Great eyes PB!

It might as well as have had a big neon sign above it. Its shape jumped right out at me. I am seriously leaning towards it being a Uwharrie period arrow head.

How big is it? It may very well be a knife instead of an arrowhead. I knew someone who collected them in KY and they found a beautiful one that was a large size. We called the University of KY Archeology College. They said arrowheads are actually very small whereas the larger pieces are usually knives or cutting instruments of sort.

It is about 2 inches long. Based off what I have read, it is a Uwharrie period arrow head.

That is amazing! Was it laying on the surface or were you digging?

I was sweeping the coils on a sandy patch in this hay field (near the coast, hence all the sand in the soil) and I was looking down (you never know what you will see) and my eyes instantly fixated onto it. It must have been the near perfect shape that got my attention plus the gray stood out against the sand. I stopped in my tracked and thought “Holy S**t!!! That’s an arrow head!!!!!”
